Research Services Team

SAINT JOHN OFFICE

Barry Strack, Regional Director of Research Services

Barry leads a talented team of research and administrative professionals dedicated to supporting Horizon's research community. In addition, he is responsible for managing all research-related activities in the Saint John Regional Hospital. Before joining Horizon, Barry lived in Toronto, Ontario, where he held several management positions in the pharmaceutical industry with companies running clinical trials throughout North America, Europe and China. In addition, he held the position of Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the Quality Assurance Journal, a John Wiley publication dedicated to continuous quality improvement in the pharmaceutical and biosciences industries. Educated at the University of Toronto, Barry holds a Bachelor's degree in Biology and a Master's degree in Forestry Science.

 

Katie Holden, Administrative Assistant to the Regional Director

Katie manages all administrative duties for the Research Office at the Saint John Regional Hospital. A native to New Brunswick, she has been employed by Horizon Health Network for 7 years. Before joining Research Services, she worked at the New Brunswick Heart Centre. Katie studied at CompuCollege in Saint John, where she received a high honour diploma for Medical Office Assistant in 2005.

 

Jacquelyn Legere, Regulatory Compliance Manager

Jacquelyn is responsible for the regional regulatory compliance program for the conduct of clinical trials. She has built her career in various roles throughout Horizon Health Network where she began as a staff nurse with the internal medicine program in 1989. Her adventure into the research world began with clinical trials began in 1995 as a clinical trials nurse and evolved into a position in Research Ethics held until 2013. Jacquelyn received her diploma in nursing in 1988 from the Saint John School of Nursing and her Bachelor of Nursing degree from UNBSJ in 2011

 

Joann Mallett, Contract and Budget Manager

Joann facilitates the development and execution of research agreements and assists investigators with the legal language within research contracts. Joann is also the coordinator of the research funding competitions administered through the research office. Joann holds a B.Ed. from UNB and a Master of Public Health from the University of Liverpool (UK).

 

George Stoica,Chief Statistician

Based in Saint John, George's responsibilities include design, data and statistical analyses on clinical investigator initiated research projects, using advanced mathematical and statistical methods applied to health-related matters. George has two Ph.D.'s, one in Statistics and one in Mathematics, has taught for 30 years in the higher education environment, coordinated 24 Master, Ph.D. and Post-doctoral students, conducted research and published 4 books and over 100 research papers in various areas of Mathematics and Statistics.  

 

Teresa Yeomans, Research Services Clerk - Saint John

Teresa is responsible for administrating the financial and accounting details of all Clinical Trials and Applied Health studies within the Zone. Before joining the Research Team, Teresa worked as a Patient Service worker for St. Joseph's Hospital OR.  She then furthered her education and received a Diploma for a Medical Device Reprocessing Technician. After her training at SJH, Teresa worked for 3 years in the SJRH OR Sterilization Department. Born in Saint John, Teresa also studied at Modern Business College where she graduated with a Secretarial Diploma.

 

Pat Shea, Research Coordinator for Research Services - Saint John

Pat is responsible for research training and assisting new coordinators, completing submissions to Horizon's Research Ethics Board, and assisting clinical investigators with their research studies. Prior to assuming her current role, Patricia was a study coordinator in geriatric research, during which time she completed her Certified Clinical Research Professional (CCRP) designation. During her diverse nursing career, she has worked in Labour and Delivery, Surgery, Surgical and Medical ICU, Neuro ICU, the Eye Clinic, Geriatric Medicine Clinic, Psychiatry, and Community Nursing. Pat is a native of Saint John; however, early in her career worked as a registered nurse in Maine and at the University of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton. She graduated from the Saint John School of Nursing.

 

​Donaldo Canales, Research Project Facilitator

Donaldo provides research design/analysis consultation to Horizon clinicians, academic faculty and students engaged in research (e.g. Dalhousie Medicine New Brunswick). Donaldo holds a Bachelor of Arts degree (University of Saskatchewan), a Master of Arts degree (University of New Brunswick), and is currently a Ph.D. candidate in Experimental/Applied Psychology at the University of New Brunswick. His expertise is in forensic psychology, and has conducted research related to offender risk assessment, recidivism prediction, mental health and offending, mental health courts, psychopathy, and police psychology. Donaldo is a stipend instructor at the University of New Brunswick Psychology Department, and has taught courses related to behaviour modification, dementia, criminal behaviour, and statistics.

 

Natasha Hanson, SOAR Research Writer

As part of the SOAR program support, Natasha provides writing support and consultation regarding research documents, funding submissions, and results publications. She also provides qualitative research support. Natasha worked previously as a Research Grants Assistant at Dalhousie Medicine New Brunswick, as well as a private qualitative research consultant. She is originally from New Brunswick, having earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Anthropology from St. Thomas University. Natasha obtained her Master's degree from Carleton University, her PhD in Social Anthropology from Dalhousie University, and completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Prince Edward Island.

 

Jen Woodland, SOAR Research Methodologist

Under the SOAR program, Jen provides methodological and statistical support to facilitate the development and completion of medical research. She received a BSc. from Cape Breton University, and an MA and PhD in Experimental Psychology from the University of New Brunswick. Prior to joining the SOAR team at Horizon Health Network (HHN), she worked as a research facilitator for HHN and Dalhousie Medicine New Brunswick, and as a stipend instructor in the Department of Psychology at the University of New Brunswick teaching courses primarily in the areas of perception, statistics, and experimental design. 

 

​Tanya Macfarlane, SOAR Research Coordinator

Tanya coordinates the recruitment, scheduling, and implementation of research activities and procedures for research participants, as part of the SOAR program. She monitors the collection, processing and recording of research data and communicates the results to the research team. Tanya worked previously as a Research Assistant at UNB. Prior to working at UNB, she worked at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital for 17 years as a Medical Device Reprocessing Technician. She has obtained two degrees from UNB - a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with Honours.

 

Bryn Robinson, MSSU Clinical Research Manager

Bryn supports all patient-oriented research requests, including requests to incorporate patient engagement into studies and to access administrative data at the NB-IRDT, for Horizon Health investigators. She received a BA honours degree in psychology and major in French, and her PhD in experimental and applied psychology at the University of New Brunswick. Her doctoral work involved researching the impacts of parental relationships on emerging adults' mental health. Prior to joining the MSSU, she was a senior policy analyst conducting strategic planning research with WorkSafeNB, as well as the vice-president of the Canadian Mental Health Association's Saint John Branch.

 

Sarah Campbell, MSSU Research Coordinator

Sarah also supports patient-oriented research requests for Horizon Health investigators, with a focus on REB applications, study establishment for multi-site projects, and spatial analyses of healthcare data (e.g., GIS mapping). She is currently a Master's candidate in Applied Health Services Research at the University of New Brunswick, studying the impact of nurse practitioners in emergency departments. Previously, Sarah received her BSc in biology from UNBSJ; this supported her previous work in environmental research, monitoring and protection as scientific project manager for the Hammond River Angling Association, and later as an environmental compliance officer for the Department of Environment and Local Government.

 

MONCTON OFFICE

Dominique Richard, Manager of Research Services - Moncton

In addition to being the primary liaison with local universities, Dominique supports research studies undertaken at The Moncton Hospital. She also plays a key role in supporting the Research Office's communications initiatives. Prior to joining Horizon, Dominique held various teaching positions, including clinical teaching at the Centre de formation médicale du Nouveau-Brunswick and as a content expert with the Department of Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour of New Brunswick. She also spent four years working as a research associate with the Atlantic Cancer Research Institute. A native of Moncton, Dominique holds a BSc Honours degree in Biology from Acadia University and a PhD from McGill University, where she specialized in neuroscience.

 

Lindsay Price, Administrative Support and Research Clerk

Lindsay is responsible for the financial and administrative details of all clinical trials within The Moncton Hospital. Lindsay has been employed with Horizon since 2008, having worked as a Patient Menu Clerk with Food and Nutrition Services and an Admission/Registration Clerk with Diagnostic Imaging. She studied Office Administration at Eastern College in 2002; later received several certifications from the International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP), and obtained a diploma for Medical Administrative Assistant in 2013.

 

FREDERICTON / MIRAMICHI OFFICES

Jenn Tuttle, Manager of Research Services - Fredericton and Miramichi

She is responsible for managing and overseeing all clinical trials and applied health research studies undertaken at The Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital, the Upper River Valley Hospital, the Oromocto Public Hospital, and the Miramichi Regional Hospital. Prior to joining Horizon, Jenn spent 13 years with the Division of Endocrinology at Capital District Health Authority in Halifax, NS. Her roles there included Registered Dietitian, Coordinator of Clinical Trials, and Manager of Endocrinology research. Jenn holds a BSc from Acadia University and an MBA from St. Mary's University in Halifax.  As a Fredericton, NB native, she is very happy to be back in her home town.
